This role calls for sound clinical judgement, excellent communication and the ability to remain calm and responsive in a busy maternity setting. You will support women through antenatal care, labour and birth, and the postnatal period, while promoting informed choice, dignity, safety and positive birth experiences.
Provide individualised, respectful midwifery care throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period. Conduct antenatal assessments, monitor maternal and fetal wellbeing, and identify changes that may require further review or escalation. Support women to make informed decisions about their care, explaining options clearly and respecting their preferences wherever clinically appropriate. Monitor labour progress and provide appropriate care and support during spontaneous vaginal births within your scope of practice. Recording patient vital signs and medical information. Maintaining accurate, complete health care records and reports. Administering medications to patients and monitoring them for side effects and reactions. Recognise complications, respond promptly to emergencies and escalate concerns to the appropriate clinician. Administer medications and treatments within your professional scope, local protocols and current prescribing arrangements. Provide immediate care for newborns, assess their wellbeing and seek additional support when needed. Support breastfeeding and infant-feeding choices with sensitive, practical guidance. Deliver postnatal care, including maternal recovery checks, newborn observations, health education and discharge preparation. Provide clear advice to women and families on maternal wellbeing, newborn care, warning signs and when to seek urgent help. Maintain accurate, timely and confidential clinical records. Follow infection-prevention procedures, safeguarding requirements, medication policies and maternity-unit protocols. Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to coordinate care and ensure effective handovers. Contribute to clinical audits, service improvement, teaching and professional development activities as appropriate.
Current registration as a midwife with the relevant professional regulatory body. A recognised midwifery qualification. Recent experience providing maternity care in a hospital, birthing centre or comparable clinical setting. Current competence in antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care. Knowledge of maternal and newborn assessment, safe birth practices, emergency response and escalation procedures. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate and respectful approach to care. Ability to work effectively under pressure and prioritise care in a busy clinical environment. Good documentation skills and confidence using electronic or paper-based clinical records. Commitment to confidentiality, safeguarding, infection prevention and professional standards. Current life-support training relevant to the role, or willingness to complete required training.
The ideal candidate will be empathetic, dependable and attentive to the needs of women and families. They will support dignity and informed choice, communicate calmly in changing situations and work constructively with colleagues to provide safe, coordinated care.
